Reflections on important dates
in SSND history by our
Women in Discernment
April 17, 1838 - First Community
Accepts
First Profession of Sisters
Sandra Helton, Temporary Professed |

I can only imagine what it
was like to live as a temporary professed woman when everyone looked
alike, sounded alike, and chose "saintly" names. And, obedience
meant that a sister obeying the superior and rules of the community
was doing the will of God. Now, there is a different understanding.
Most temporary professed communities/classrooms are not defined by
the walls of the convent/school, but by the needs of our world. We
mutually discern how we will live out our lives as religious. I also
believe that just as those women of 1838 were called to live prophetically,
love God with their whole heart, mind, soul, and to do whatever God
tells them--I too, have said "Yes" to the exact same call. |
